There’s Magic, Then There’s MAGIC

Many Christians are confused about why it’s ok to like The Lord of the Rings but not Harry Potter. Others are even more confused and think it’s not ok to like Tolkien or Lewis’ Narnia or any fantasy at all. The most confused think that as long as children are reading, it doesn’t matter what they read, and the Harry Potter books are just harmless and entertaining.

Here are a couple of thought-provoking articles about why my first statement above (Tolkien good, Rowling bad) is true. The first is a good overview, the second gives you more to chew on.

Measure of Time

The buzzing, work-filled day has now gone past,
Yet my full brain continues to buzz on.
The children sweetly slumbering at last;
I pray they will remain there until dawn.
It’s time to take a measure of my day
And calculate the sum of all this toil.
Have I spent my moments in a wise way–
Will the fruit of my hands flourish or spoil?
O, God, help me to make each moment count,
For what is gone cannot be gained anew.
Time speeds on, and small is its amount.
Direct my thoughts to dwell, Divine, on You.
Sleeping sweet faces focus, free, my mind,
And cause me, Lord, Thy calming will to find.

Here’s a link to a page from Preston-Speed Publications, the people who publish those nice hardback G.A. Henty novels, with movie suggestions by time period. When you go, keep your eyes closed, or at least squinted, and find a good movie to rent at the video store this weekend.

Work on Your Marriage

After 21 years of marriage to the same husband, I can truly say we are happier together now than we have ever been. Every year gets better. But it’s work! Please don’t quit loving the one to whom you pledged your troth. The world is full of failed marriages and suffering children.

What is love? Read I Corinthians 13 again, and next to each verse, write down a way you can show love to your spouse. Love is not just something you say, it’s not always something you feel; it’s something you DO!

Here are some good suggestions for communicating love to your husband. Feel a nag coming on? Replace it with one of these phrases instead.
