The past few weeks I have been providentially forced to face the reality of not only spending time with, but loving people with whom I have some deep philosophical disagreements. And it has been good for me.
I have been cultivating a wonderful friendship with a couple whom I have met through my book addiction; I don’t think they have a relationship with God through our Savior Jesus Christ, yet they are a great blessing and even a comfort to me and my family.
I have also met and tremendously enjoyed the company of a dear lady who homeschools through the charter school in our area. If you have read my weblog, you know how I feel about the charter schools
.
Tonight I have been reading about an actress in a TV show I have never watched (I think it’s called “Everybody Loves Raymond.”) Her name is Patricia Heaton, and she is one of the handful of prolife actresses in Hollywood. She is not shy about it either! She is an honorary co-chair of Feminists for Life. If you have checked out my links, you may have noticed that I endorse a site called Ladies Against Feminism. Yet I am thrilled to see these self-proclaimed feminists defending the unborn and helping women who are in danger of killing their own children. I’m sure they can reach many women I could never reach.
So what is the lesson in all this? I am not caving on any of my strongly-held opinions. But the reality is that there are real people out there who are different from me, and they are made in the image of God. I am to be a servant in the world, not a sledgehammer. My forum here sometimes enables me to be a “prophet.” Being “nice” is not really showing love. Yet, as God gives me opportunity to deal with individuals in my life, I can show another kind of love in serving them and listening as well as talking.
I am praying for opportunities to give the gospel and to discuss conservative ideas. But most of all I am praying for wisdom.
