Free Curriculum

We always tell our children, “TANSTAAFL” when we think they might be swept away by the lure of easy riches (There Ain’t No Such Thing As A Free Lunch…although our friend David Chilton used to say it should be “TINSTAAFL,” There Is No Such Thing As A Free Lunch).

However, there is a wonderful resource available on the web which you must check out, and it is nearly free if you don’t count the cost of your internet access, purchasing recommended books and printing out online texts.

This resource is the Ambleside Online Curriculum. It is a 6-year curriculum for Charlotte Mason enthusiasts. Our family uses the Robinson Curriculum for homeschooling, but I found numerous useful materials here. I think Charlotte Mason’s methods and the Robinson method are very compatible, and this website has links to many great materials, including entire out-of-print texts as well as songs and great art.

The mothers who put together this detailed curriculum have included many suggestions for how to implement it, along with lots of articles on the ideas of Charlotte Mason. They request that you read and agree to their licensing agreement which basically says you will not sell the curriculum or post large sections of it.

There is also a related online curriculum available for the older grades, House of Education. Years 7 and 8 are posted, with 9-12 to come.

I’m Not Alone

This article on bibliophiles (book nuts) struck a familiar chord. The author compares this obsession to drug addiction; I prefer to call it a disease. Shall we take a poll?

My sympathetic husband (or should I call him an enabler?) recently gave me two wonderful books about book lovers: Ex Libris and A Gentle Madness. The dear man is actually building me a library, so I guess he is resigned to having a book crazy wife. Maybe he thinks humoring me is easier than locking me in the attic like Mr. Rochester did to his wife…and it keeps the fire insurance payments down.

I Knew It!

Take a gander at this . After all, the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world. Previous studies have indicated that it takes “alpha” females to raise “alpha” males (alpha as in go-getters, top dogs, get it?)
